VOGUE HOMME – NIPPON – 3

Japan, japan, japan… the greatest consumers of designer products means also they REALLY know how to produce a magazine that is highly desirable. Flipping through the pages (cos i cant read Jap) its page after page of highly styled and crafted images and looks that you can’t get enough of. Stylist of the moment, Nicola Formichetti, styled the series by Steven Klein… like a match made in heaven, the outcome is perfection. I want a petition to push VogueHommeNippon to be monthly and be in dual language, however, the wait (published 2 times a year!) and the foreign-ness (this means I could add my own narratives), just makes it that much more special.

PURPLE – Fall 09

PURPLE magazine is an acutely curated piece of Fashion periodical. Always delivering the interviews with the fashion insiders and great photography sets shot by and shooting the best and most interesting. This issue is no difference… to be honest I’m still slowly savouring every bit of this but what caught my eyes at first glance was the cover and the series by Terry and the nudes of  Dree Hemingway by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin (my all time fav photographer duo). I also love the debossed glyph of  ”Le.Diable”  which added that “Je ne sais quoi”.

FANTASTIC MAN’s GENTLEWOMAN

FANTASTIC MAN has done it yet again! Proving itself to be the dichotomy of fashionable and trendiness again and again, making it ever so nourishing to read! Apart from the FANTASTIC articles, the thrilling thing about this issue is the “launch” of FANTASTIC MAN’s Gal Pal, GENTLEWOMAN ! It is like guy wrapping his arms around this very delicate and precious gem of a gal, but I’m sure in due time, she would flourish and bloom into the GENTLEWOMAN she is!

a slice of PIE

Posted in Interesting, magazines by forcedread on August 15, 2009

One of the best things about indie-publications is that they can do whatever they fancy! And PIE Paper is one of such brilliantly executed publication from New Zealand! Printed in newsprint, PIE Paper is a thematic publication that covers a slice of everything nice – contents and visually wise. See the PIE’s pie-chart for a good idea of what they are all about. They have launched their first issue (#00 THE CIRCLE) and the new issue is just made available yesterday (14 Aug), worldwide. Below are some spreads from the first issue.

FANTASTIC INTERVIEW

...I don’t think you should speak to the reader. I mean, you’re a magazine because you speak to the reader, but you don’t have to literally speak to the reader. If I say, “You’ll want a Dolce & Gabbana bag this season,” maybe you say, “Well, actually the only thing I’m not looking for right now is a bag, so why do you say that to me?” If you eliminate those choices, then you immediately fall into a certain formality. But also we wanted it to be a very language-driven magazine…

Genius! Read this interview of my magazine heros – Gert Jonkers and Jop van Bennekom – creators of Fantastic Man and Butt Magazine! (Interview and image are both from InterviewMagazine.com)

A Magazine Curated By – Proenza Schouler

A Magazine Curated By – is a platform where a fashion designer(s) are given free range to put together a visual references / inspiration in a form of a magazine. And it proves to be quite an interesting read / flip! What amazes me after having gone through all 9 issues thus far, is how the visual representation is so truthful and direct to the designer’s aesthetic and direction of their collections. Design is a process and a it grows, engages and forms organically and it is a true inspiration to be able to see this process coming to live in each of this magazines!

The most recent issue (A#9), featuring the New York’s sparkling stars, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, of Proenza Schouler fame (also the new baby of Valentino Fashion Group), is one of my favourite till far. It starts off with an candid but insightful interview of the duo, giving us a peek into their start, how they met, the design process and what inspires them…and the rest of the magazine showcases some of their favourite artists, personalities, stylists and photographers.

Another great news is that the magazine’s website is starting to publish all the magazine (slowly) on-line. Currently, 2 are published. So missed any previous issues. Go here and sample them.

Man About Town vesus Fantastic Man

Man About Town Spring Summer 2009 v e r s u s  Fantastic-Man-Magazine

2 of my favourite mens magazine at the moment – Man About Town & Fantastic Man

Man About Town, thanks to the art direction by UK design company, SATURDAY, is in my opinion, one of the most stylistic mainstream mens magazine out there, the rhythm and pacing of the magazine is good and clear, but yet, with clever headline and photography / art direction, I do not feel being “forced” to read about the products they are pushing. Its subtly done with great taste. I do not feel like I have spent money buying a catalogue. There are also a peppering of great articles and features. Its a pleasure to flip or read.

versus

Fantastic Man, is Fantastic! With Jop Van Bennekom’s previous experience in RE- Magazine and later BUTT, and together with Gert Jonkers, they have created the mens magazine like no other. It stands out with its Contents largely, covering the peripheral of fashion that seems obvious but yet so exciting and interesting to read. I especially love the feature on “The Perfect Man” which answers the age old question of who or what is the barometer of size 48, and yes, he’s alive. It is articles as such that drives the success of Fantastic Man.
