To many, Dasha Zhukova came out of nowhere. That’s because, until recently, the 28-year-old art patron, fashion designer, museum founder, and newly anointed editor in chief of Pop magazine was just another wealthy Russian girl schlepping a croc Birkin around London in a chauffeured Mercedes. Sure, she may have been spotted at a few events in years past, but she was rarely pursued. A little bit of pre-2008 photo research results in only a few images, namely from when she dated a certain Russian tennis player who for a time was ranked number one in the world. Today, the tennis-player boyfriend is gone, and in his place is 42-year-old Roman Abramovich, the Russian oligarch who Vanity Fairranked number eight on last year’s list of most powerful people…..

VOGUE HOMME – NIPPON – 3
Japan, japan, japan… the greatest consumers of designer products means also they REALLY know how to produce a magazine that is highly desirable. Flipping through the pages (cos i cant read Jap) its page after page of highly styled and crafted images and looks that you can’t get enough of. Stylist of the moment, Nicola Formichetti, styled the series by Steven Klein… like a match made in heaven, the outcome is perfection. I want a petition to push VogueHommeNippon to be monthly and be in dual language, however, the wait (published 2 times a year!) and the foreign-ness (this means I could add my own narratives), just makes it that much more special.
A Magazine Curated By – Proenza Schouler
A Magazine Curated By – is a platform where a fashion designer(s) are given free range to put together a visual references / inspiration in a form of a magazine. And it proves to be quite an interesting read / flip! What amazes me after having gone through all 9 issues thus far, is how the visual representation is so truthful and direct to the designer’s aesthetic and direction of their collections. Design is a process and a it grows, engages and forms organically and it is a true inspiration to be able to see this process coming to live in each of this magazines!
The most recent issue (A#9), featuring the New York’s sparkling stars, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, of Proenza Schouler fame (also the new baby of Valentino Fashion Group), is one of my favourite till far. It starts off with an candid but insightful interview of the duo, giving us a peek into their start, how they met, the design process and what inspires them…and the rest of the magazine showcases some of their favourite artists, personalities, stylists and photographers.
Another great news is that the magazine’s website is starting to publish all the magazine (slowly) on-line. Currently, 2 are published. So missed any previous issues. Go here and sample them.
